Why Homecoming in College Doesn’t Compare to How it Should Be

Before coming to college, I always had an image in my head of what homecoming football games would be like. Maybe growing up near Syracuse gave me preconceived notions about how student sections should be bustling with cheering fans. Unfortunately, Fisher doesn’t have that. Instead, we have students strewn throughout the crowd with what little support we have being drowned out by cheering parents.

SGA attempted to encourage school spirit by handing out inflatable clappers to cheer on the football team, however their attempts failed due to lack of a student section. They just ended up deflated throughout the stadium or in the hands of annoying children (clapping them in my ear).

So, here are some suggestions to my fellow classmates:

1. Form a student section.

This is so easy to do. We’re all at the game in different places throughout the stadium. If we combine our school spirit, we can have a student section that no empire 8 college wants to mess with.

2. Get the word out

No one should ever question when homecoming is. This is something that we should be excited to put on our best maroon and yellow outfits for. Someone actually yik yaked, “So what time is the game at?” You mean you couldn’t hear our bustling crowd from your dorm room?! Weird.

3. Spirit Leaders.

This is someone that stands at the front of the student section orchestrating chants for our team. You probably remember this from high school, and unlike your high school boyfriend, this is something that should be brought to college.

4. Show your spirit on social media.

On other school’s homecoming days, the only thing I see on my Instagram feed is whatever color their school is. Why doesn’t this happen at Fisher? We have no problem blowing up insta with our “pre-bar” pics, so why can’t we share the love on homecoming day?

5. Recognize how good our team actually is.

Last year we made it to the Quarter Finals of the NCAAs in Texas. So why aren’t we portraying our support through enthusiastic chants and cheers? Liven up Fisher, we have something to be proud of!

GOOOOO CARDINALS!
